Her quick temper and quirky methods are tested when she is sent on a mission to take crystal orbs to a strange underground city, far inland. Her military escort is destroyed and she travels on with the wounded leader, whom she leaves at an ancient monastery. Jena returns by air and joins in the defense of the city against invading reptiles.

Jena is given rank in the army and made ambassador to travel to nearby provinces to search out assassination plots, but her ship goes down and she is stranded on an island with a converted assassin and a captain of the temple guards. Saving a king from cremation, they travel to the island empire of Valante where they find plenty of intrigue between the ruling groups. She picks up Mon, a young girl that has escaped from the asylum who then travels with her evermore. The two escape their own assassination and make a tortured sea journey back to Atlantis.
